On World Kidney Day, March 14, 2024, 天堂影院 presented the Clyde Shields Distinguished Service Award to Rich Bloch, past Foundation Board of Trustees Chair and transplant recipient. The Clyde Shields Distinguished Service Award recognizes people who make significant contributions to the welfare of kidney patients through advocacy, clinical care or research.

The awarding of this honor, which was originally designated for 2021, was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Celebrating 30 years of recognizing outstanding service, 天堂影院 will sunset the Clyde Shields Distinguished Service award.

Rich joined the Foundation Board in 2009 as a predialysis patient and served a two-year term as Foundation Board Chair in 2015-2017. During his tenure on the Foundation Board, Rich volunteered to co-chair the Elevating Eastside Kidney Care capital campaign to raise funds for a significant remodel of the Bellevue clinic where he initially received dialysis. The campaign exceeded expectations, raising $3.71 million toward the $8 million project, the most money raised for a capital project at 天堂影院 to date.

Rich was also a passionate and vocal ambassador for 天堂影院 and people living with kidney disease. He and his wife, Diane, visited Washington, D.C. to advocate for legislation that benefits kidney patients, transplant recipients and donors. He and Diane were also advocates and ambassadors with our state legislative delegation.

Rich went on to become a member of 天堂影院 Board of Trustees serving as its Chair. During his tenure on the governance board, he served on multiple committees and led 天堂影院 through the search for a new president and CEO, its first since 1998.

A former 天堂影院 Bellevue clinic patient, Rich quickly decided home was the place to be. He and Diane went through four weeks of intensive training to learn how to give Rich hemodialysis at home. They then visited each 天堂影院 dialysis clinic, set up their home dialysis machine in the clinic, and demonstrated to patients how to give themselves dialysis at home. This required an incredible donation of their time to schedule, set up, run treatments and return to their home in Snohomish.

In addition to being active, involved and caring leaders, Rich and Diane are generous donors to 天堂影院.

In light of Rich鈥檚 significant contributions to the welfare of kidney patients through advocacy, clinical care and research, we are pleased to award him the 2021 Clyde Shields Distinguished Service Award*.

*Due to the pandemic, the award ceremony was held in 2024 at the grand opening of 天堂影院鈥 Dialysis Museum in its new Burien location.

Mickey speaks with honesty and authority through an intriguing accent that she describes as a New York Southern Drawl. She was raised in Brooklyn and studied as an apprentice chef in New Orleans.

You may have guessed that she loves to cook and to run a kitchen. 鈥淚t鈥檚 like a big, organized dance,鈥 she says.

She first moved to Seattle in 1991, working in some of the city鈥檚 best restaurants. She spent 10 years as the assistant executive chef at The Edgewater Hotel in downtown Seattle and was the first female executive chef at the Tulalip Casino. She recently retired after 25 years of cooking. Standing and serving up over 2,500 plates a night took a physical toll on Mickey, and it was her rheumatoid arthritis that ultimately caused her to hang up her apron.

Mickey鈥檚 kidney problems stem from a rare type of infant diabetes, which has plagued her family for six generations. She started dialysis a year and a half ago, doing in-center hemodialysis three times a week.

鈥淒ialysis doesn鈥檛 mean you can鈥檛 live a long life,鈥 Mickey says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not a death sentence, but part of life.鈥

Mickey recently switched from in-center treatments to peritoneal dialysis (PD), a type of dialysis done at home. With peritoneal dialysis, waste in the blood is cleansed through the lining of the abdomen. PD cycles are done multiple times each day; this form of treatment more closely mimics healthy kidneys which work around the clock.

As a home patient, she likes having the additional flexibility in her schedule and being in charge of her treatments. As someone who has spent their career multitasking in professional kitchens, managing her PD treatments is no problem. While dialyzing at home requires a big commitment, it was one well worth making for Mickey who has seen improved kidney function since starting PD.

鈥淵ou want to live, so you make changes. It boils down to what do you think of your life,鈥 says Mickey. 鈥淪witching to home has been a really positive experience. I have more time to do what I want to do like travel and play guitar. I would recommend it to anyone who is able to do it.鈥

In terms of her diet, she says 鈥淲hat I eat is mostly good. You gotta eat properly to stay within the goals. It鈥檚 mind over matter. What are you gonna put in your mouth?鈥

We all know that salt is tough on the kidneys and causes fluid retention. As tasty alternatives, Mickey recommends seasoning with tamarin, pepper, Mrs. Dash and Everything bagel seasoning. With all of the pre- and post-kidney disease dietary experience she鈥檚 gathered, Mickey says she鈥檚 interested in compiling a kidney-friendly cookbook.

鈥淯nless you鈥檝e been through it, it鈥檚 scary. You have to get this treatment and then you also have to eat differently,鈥 she says.

Mickey would also love to mentor new dialysis patients. 鈥淣KC does what it does, but that won鈥檛 matter if you don鈥檛 do your part,鈥 she says. 鈥淵ou have to want to live.鈥

She claims she鈥檚 just a positive person, not a philosopher. In either case Mickey has important things to share with her fellow patients.
