Get moving! Being proactive about your health is the best way to prevent kidney disease, particularly if you belong to a high-risk group.

Eat well and be active

Eating a balanced diet helps your kidneys function efficiently. Reducing your salt intake also can help you avoid developing chronic kidney disease and high blood pressure.

Exercise is key to your health. If you’re overweight, exercise is a great way to burn fat, and it helps condition one of the most important muscles in your body, the heart. 

 

Monitor your medications

Take your medications as prescribed. Talk to your doctor if you have concerns or side effects.

Avoid regularly taking pain/anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen (Advil, Aleve, Motrin). Long term use of these drugs can contribute to kidney disease.

Talk with your doctor about any vitamins and supplements you are taking.

✓ Follow prescribed treatments to control diabetes and/or high blood pressure

✓ Lose extra weight with a healthy diet and regular exercise

✓ Limit the alcohol you consume

✓ Avoid all illegal drugs 

✓ Don’t overuse prescription and over-the-counter medicines

✓ Eat less salt, protein and fat

✓ Know your family health history and get regular checkups
